Making chickens happy when they are not allowed to free-range

Growing greens for chickens on a plant coaster

4 white chickens picking out of a plant coaster with small greens

My children love to sow and since it is garden season the chickens are not allowed to free-range, so to make both happy I let the children sow and grow plant coasters filled with pigeon feed. The pigeon feed exists of a wide variety of seeds; grains, peas, corn poppy, mustard, to name a few. There is not much to it, just fill a layer of soil on a plant coaster, spread a hand full of pigeon feed around and put a little bit of soil barely covering the seed on top. Now all it takes is some water and patience and after a week or so it is ready to be devoured by the chickens. We keep these plant coasters in our greenhouse; otherwise the wind would blow them over.

The kid’s love it and keep on checking how it is growing and asking me if they can already give it to the chickens. I have the impression the chickens love the grains most, so we will be mixing some more grains in and try that soon.
